Mumbai to Alibaug: ferry, road & how long it really takes

Alibaug sits just across the water from Mumbai, which is exactly why it’s the city’s favourite weekend escape. There are two ways to get here — and which you pick depends on your mood, your luggage and the season.

The Mandwa ferry (the scenic way)

Catamaran and RoRo ferries run between Mumbai and Mandwa jetty, and it’s by far the prettiest arrival — open water, big skies and the coast rising ahead. The crossing itself is short (roughly an hour door-to-jetty including boarding), and from Mandwa it’s a easy drive on to Sahan. Sailings and operators change with the season and the weather, so it’s always worth checking the current timings before you set out — message us and we’ll point you to the latest schedule.

Tip: in the monsoon, ferry services can pause in rough seas — when in doubt, take the road.

By road

By car, Alibaug is roughly 95–110 km from Mumbai via the Mumbai–Goa highway and the Pen–Alibaug road — usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and where in the city you start. From Pune, it’s around 3 to 3.5 hours. The drive is straightforward and gives you the freedom of your own car once you’re here.
